MIKOSHI
PORTABLE SHRINE

The Mikoshi is the portable miniature shrine carried during Japanese festivals in many regions. It is believed that Mikoshi holds the spirit of the deity of that shrine. To carry Mikoshi is like people parading around local areas and signifies the warding off of misfortune and wishing for the happiness of its people.

We do shaking and rocking the Mikoshi while carrying it – it is not just to make a racket, but rather a gesture for the deity, to have it involved in the fun of the festival as the main focus. Rocking the Mikoshi is to invigorate the deity and enliven the land.

Behind-the-scenes story of Mikoshi…

Here on the Gold Coast, it was donated by Haraoka Setsubi Kogyo via Yokohama Minami Rotary Club to Robina State High School as a symbol of mutual respect between Australian and Japanese communities on 07th July 2024.
Join our MIKOSHI EXPERIENCE!

LET’S JOIN OUR FIRST MIKOSHI CARRYING at 9.30am!

We have members of the 3 related Mikoshi association groups to demonstrate how this ceremony is performed. You are most welcome to join and carry this Mikoshi on your shoulder to experience the authentic Japanese Matsuri atmosphere.

We are currently seeking 20 people who can assist us by carrying the mikoshi first thing in the morning on September 21st (Saturday), during Japan & Friends Day. This will take place from 9:30-9:50am.

Requirements:

  • Please wear comfortable clothing suitable for movement.
  • Participants must be 18 years or older and in good health.

If anyone is interested in participating, please email Your Name and Date of Birth to the following information via link below.
